Morrissey Drubs St. Ed's in Title Tilt

Scoring at least once in every period, a big, powerful Morrissey aggregation rolled over St. Edward's by a 32-0 score to annex the 1950 Interhall football championship. A steady drizzle soaked the field before the contest and continued throughout the game.

Morrissey could do no wrong as they ran over their smaller opponents. On the other hand, St. Ed's vaunted attack fizzled before the staunch Soph line. Fred Crowe, the Saint's big fullback, played most of the game and was the whole show on offense as he hit the line again and again and completed four out of 18 passes for most of the losers' yardage. The slippery pigskin skidded out of the hands of his receivers on several occasions to lower his completion percentage.

Over in the winners' camp, Tom Walker, a fleet-footed left half, was the whole offensive show. He scored two TD's, had one scoring jaunt called back because of a penalty and did most of the passing for the victors, including a 61 yard touchdown toss in the fourth quarter for the final Morrissey score.

Morrissey scored their first touchdown the second time they got their hands on the ball. Walker paced the drive with a 22 yard pass and then raced nine yards around his own left end for the touchdown\m. The try for conversion failed and at the end of the first period it was 6-0, Morrissey.

In the second period, a bad St. Ed's punt set up the second touchdown, giving Morrissey possession on the enemy 35. Line smashes by Kucharczuk and Walker gave Morrissey a touchdown, but an offside penalty nullified the score and put Morrissey back on the 20. Three plays later, Kucharczuk bucked over from the three and Morrissey led at the half, 12-0.

Early in the third period another bad punt set up the third Morrissey touchdown. Taking the ball on the Saints' 35, the winners drove for the remaining yardage in three plays with a 24-yard run by Walker high-lighting the drive. Pat Smith's conversion attempt was successful and St. Eds was behind, 19-0.

Morrissey scored two more touchdowns in the last period. The first came as a result of a pass interception. The Soph's Pierce Walsh intercepted a Crowe pass on the 21 and ran all the way for the score. A few minutes later, Walker passed to Dan McGoven who grabbed the pigskin at mid-field and sprinted 50 yards for the last score of the game.

Talking Points

Preseason

  • Games are now 48 minutes in length. This is a departure from the college-regulation hour that was provided to teams before World War II.

Regular Season

  • Morrissey played Alumni at the end of the season and initially lost 7-0. However, Morrissey coach Tom Canfield recognized one of Alumni's players, Fred Bransfield, as having played for a varsity freshmen team in the past. When the case was brought before Mr. Napolitano, director of interhall athletics, he was able to provide a roster of the 1948 varsity freshman team. Bransfield's name was on it, resulting in him being ruled ineligible to participate on an interhall football team and forcing Alumni to forfeit the game. The official score became a 1-0 win for Morrissey.

  • Cavanaugh's 12-6 win over Zahm in week 5 was hailed as the upset of the season, given Cavanaugh had yet to score on any team.

Postseason

  • Morrissey won the 1950 championship in record-breaking fashion despite a small schedule, an unofficial loss, and a regular season point differential of just six points.
