The John Egan Fund

The injury of Lyons halfback John Egan, and the actions taken by his teammates to help him return to Notre Dame.

John Egan was a Lyons Hall football player who suffered a leg fracture in a 1926 game against Morrissey. Eagan's teammates were told that he may have to forfeit his tuition and leave the university to pay off his medical bills. Hearing this, they traveled to the 1926 Notre Dame-Army game, and upon a riveting Irish victory, stole a section of the goalpost. When they returned to campus, they cut the section into pieces and sold them to students as part of the "Egan Fund". Two months later, Mr. Egan returned to campus healthy and without any debt, except to his extraordinary friends.
