A History of Nicknames
Bullfrogs and He-men and Gamecocks oh my! The first interhall nicknames were recorded by the Scholastic in the 1920s. For the next five decades, team names usually did not stick around for more than a couple seasons. I attribute this to the fact that, before the "stay-hall" system was implemented during the 1960s, students used to change halls every year. This movement between halls made it difficult for dorm cultures to develop and nicknames to stick. By the 1970s, however, the first permanent names began to appear. The oldest nickname in continuous use is the "Big Red" of Dillon, which first popped up in the 1971 season.
